Electric steering

Can a power steering car be changed over to the newer electric steering rack? I understand the elec. steering cars have different modes, not really concerned with that. Just wondering if you put power to the rack will it will work. Thanks MIke

The big concern is is the electrical connectors there ? And how do you activate it?

I think the brains are part of the rack. So if you run power to it..........

I'm not sure I have looked at one yet . I was assuming it required some kind of signal from a module with in the car somewhere.

you may be right. I was hoping it would be as simple as installing the rack and powering it up. And maybe the rack has a default mode as long as it has power.

When I do my next oil change I will see if there is any unused electrical connectors down there .

On the hellcat ? 2018 demon and wide body only . 2019 and up all hellcat variants.

392 cars had it starting in 2011.

Yeah I thought it was wierd that 2015-2018 hellcats got hydraulic power steering when pretty much everything else had electric power steering.

My 2016 Camaro 2SS has electric power steering.....it's pretty cool. Increases resistance with speed and stuff.

S2000’s all had EPS, and that was 20 years ago.

My 17 Hellcat had no extra wiring for the EPS rack. I would count on the EPS being tied to everything on the CAN bus, as you can adjust the steering weight through the SRT menus.

Ok well........ The 2018 and up rack, absolutely has to have more than just a power supply.

May want to double check on '11's having electric steering. I bought a 2011 SRT 392 brand new, and it had hydraulic steering. Not a big deal, I personally have not heard of any Challengers having electric steering until either 17 or 18....

No idea what the electric steering gets its signal from.....almost has to be either steering shaft or wheel position?? Seems like something so important should be its own stand-alone system and not go through the ECU with 1000 other things...now I'm wondering how it works! lol

Most EPS systems use a steering angle sensor, and some type of steering torque sensor. Engine speed and vehicle speed are typically inputs used to adjust assist.

You are correct . I went and checked it was the 5.7L cars that got the electric power steering. Not the 6.4 cars . My bad .

My 2015 SRT had it.
