Called HHP. Said they’re only ever to get 1/4” and some are real tight. When it is, they bash the ribs flat. Not possible for me with the engine and cradle in the car, and the engine can’t be shifted over.
FYI the online Chilton manual says in order to replace the exhaust headers to pull the heads off. Would cost you a head gasket and an intake gasket, but time-wise might actually be quicker. Probably much less frustrating for sure--might also make dealing with clearance issues easier. The downside is how many more mating surfaces you'd have to clean... which is arguably the suckiest part.
