My input on an idling engine (a performance engine you care about) is to not let it idle at a steady RPM, but to vary the engine RPM up and down.

The idea is to not let those rings wear in at idle which can create a "land" that the rings have to bust through once they get into the upper RPM range and everything stretches out.

When I'm warming up an engine, after about 1min or so, I'll start gently varying RPM up through 3000ish, no hard rule, just not set at one RPM.

And I always try to hit max RPM at least once when I'm driving, keeping that land from being created on the non-stretched side of life.

Get what your saying over years, but I wouldn't think a couple minutes at a specific rpm would wear away that much material. I mean usually when you reborn an engine your not taking out that much material to return it to a true bore size

And they probably will..although not worth much if and when you decide to sell (depending on how far over 200 you go..)....
Happy with 160k on a v8. By then the chassis needs so much work it's now a junker

Idling is bad. Period. The EPA ratings are based on idle and cruising. Tim Kuniskis was on a video saying that epa standards don’t take into account for power enrichment, which happens the second you step on the gas. Thats where they have all of their flexibility and why they’re able to do what they do
I heard normal idling was good as it allows the engine to rest and settle down. Like all the material will relax because it's not under a load.

Not sure that’s how that works, once everything is up to temp it’s up to temp. Thermal expansion

Its funny how we all seem to baby our fragile little Hellcat motors in one way or another. I am just as guilty of it as well.

For a stress free driving experience get a 4.0 I6 Jeep motor and it will take anything you can throw at it. Idle all day, drive the piss out of it cold, let it warm up at high idle, just drive normal, it does not matter, the 4.0 will take anything and everything you can throw at it. The 4.0 is hands down the best motor ever built, especially with regards to reliably and longevity!

Any proof? Or just saying?
Please re-read my post 5213. I don't know how many of the contributors to this thread keep their vehicles 20y, but I have. Miles is one thing, but years is completely different. 150kmi on a vehicle in 5 years is entirely different than 150kmi in 20y. I am comfortable and confident in giving the engine a chance to warm a bit, to let the temps stabilize a bit, then drive gingerly until it reaches op temp. It has worked for me and I will continue to do it. Again, how many of these guys advocating no warm-up have kept vehicles for 20y? Just sayin'!

You should've asked me two years ago, before I sold a few.. Now I'm down to just three of them.

But it's basically irrelevant. I can't even abuse a rental vehicle by idling it, so why would I subject my own to it?

It's like kicking my dog, I can do it, but you can't.

What you do, and how you do it is absolutely your deal. Live and die with your decisions.

: )

I've changed my oil more times than I can count with only a couple hundred miles in it, most think I'm crazy...

(I am crazy)

True, thermal expansion. I thought they meant the stress in the block while driving (load) and idle (no load)
Not sure how much stuff flexs under a load. And this could have been referring to older engine blocks. 🤔
